Bhutan by road starts at Phuentsholing, not at the palace towns everyone posts about. Budget the first day for the crossing and the permit, and the rest of the trip stops feeling rushed.
Your entry permit is filed at the Phuentsholing immigration office against your passport or voter ID and two passport photographs. It normally clears within a working day, which is why every Bhutan itinerary we run begins with a night at the border town rather than pushing straight through to Thimphu.
Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee per person per night, set by the Bhutanese government and payable at immigration. It sits outside our quoted fare because the rate is not ours to control, and we tell you the current figure before you book so there is no surprise at the counter.
Phuentsholing to settle in and clear the permit, Thimphu for the capital and its markets, Punakha for the valley and the dzong, then back. Add Paro at the end for the airport and, if your knees allow it, the walk up to Tiger's Nest.
