Meghalaya photographs beautifully and drives slowly. The distances on a map are short; the roads through the hills are not fast, and the single-day root bridge trek is the one thing guests consistently underestimate.
Shillong to Cherrapunji is about ninety minutes on a good day. Cherrapunji to Dawki, for the clear Umngot river, runs closer to two hours each way. Treat both as half-day commitments once you add stops for viewpoints and waterfalls.
The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat is a steep, several-hour round trip on foot, not a quick photo stop. Guests who try to combine it with another destination the same day usually regret it. We schedule it as its own day with an early start.
Two nights around Shillong and Cherrapunji, a full day for Nongriat, a day trip to Dawki and Mawlynnong, then back. Add Kaziranga on either end if wildlife is on the list.
